Member Club Hot Spot / Middle Penninsula Jeep Association, Inc.
« on: August 23, 2013, 12:14:31 am »
Initially begun a dozen years ago in Gloucester, Virginia (the TRUE Middle Penninsula) this Club has since grown and expanded South a bit into the general Tidewater area of Virginia.  Most members today live in Hampton, Newport News, Yorktown, as well as Gloucester and parts North.

There are only three requirements to join MPJAI:
1) Own a Jeep
2) Complete the Tread Lightly Course
3) Pay yer dues

Most of us get a *lot* more than that out of our membership, though.
Just ask Starr Motors for my maintenance and upgrade records sometime.

Here is an exchange I had with the Off-Camber Crawlers regarding trail cleanup.
I changed the dates since they already had a ride planned. Oct 12-14 looks pretty busy as well.

Subject: [OCC] Re: Labor Day Weekend Camping Wheeling

Greetings, Bryan and OCC!

I visited Ranger Burge of the North River District in Harrisonburg to
introduce myself as Gregg Jackson's relief in the position of Virginia
4-Wheel Drive Assn. Land Use Coordinator. We had a wide-ranging discussion
regarding the challenges he sees in his forest district, which includes the
areas you mentioned for this trip.

First and foremost: Ranger Burge would greatly appreciate a trail cleanup
effort on the Second Mountain Trail. I have asked VA4WDA to designate the
Columbus Day holiday weekend, but there are NUMEROUS other events taking
place October 12-13.

Would all participants in this OCC Labor Day event consider joining me on
Second Mountain Trail one day of this weekend? If so, I will adjust the date
and inform any other participants who have expressed an interest in the
cleanup. This looks to me like a WIN-WIN-WIN opportunity and I hope you will
consider it.

As you know ... Second Mountain is not a lengthy trail, and a dozen rigs
could probably hit the whole thing in a matter of hours. There is a
horse/ATV loading ramp at the top of the trail, and all we need do is pile
our trash collection there and inform the Ranger Office which will drive up
and load our trash.

I have the USFS paperwork to collect and document wheeler hours and effort,
and I have also a substantial fund courtesy of VA4WDA to cover any expenses
this cleanup would occur.

I am attempting to become and activist Land Use manager, and this initial
trash cleanup would GO A VERY LONG WAY toward re-establishing a working
relationship with the North River Ranger District. I will gladly brief any
OCC members on-site if we can get this going.

(Sorry to break in on your Yahoo Group! I only lurk usually!)
Sincerely,
Phillip Wolf

Hi Phillip,

We should be arriving at the loading ramp area before Noon. I'm guessing
about 10-11 AM. OCC often removes trash from the trail. We would be glad to
make an extra effort on Second Mountain Trail, Sunday September 1st. We have
5 rigs going so far, but I expect a couple more. I appreciate your activism
to support open lands for off-roading! Let me know if there's anything else
I need to know about the clean-up.

Happy Motoring,

In my sit-down interview with U. S. Forest Service Ranger Burge, of the North River District of the GWNF, he mentioned a number of popular trails that are off-limits and illegal to run. Got any idea why?

Check out this picture of what I am sure was a pristine piece of Wilderness. See those trails some yuck-yuck-yucks in pick'em-up trucks tore doing yee-haw brodies on the rocks?

The same thing is happening in the GWNF.
This is why we can't have nice things.

TREAD LIGHTLY is not just a saying
