Land Use General Discussion Board / Tellico - one sad precautionary tale
« Last post by pcwolf on October 28, 2013, 07:22:50 pm »
I found this article of interest.  Please note that it is a blog post, and as such, it may be factual or it may just be opinion.  But it tells me I have to work harder with the USFS here in Virginia!

Latest News From Our Land use Chair / Hampton Roads Jeep Club - Shoe Creek brief
« Last post by pcwolf on October 23, 2013, 10:53:01 pm »
I had the great pleasure of speaking tonight to members of the HRJC at their monthly gathering at Uno Grill at the intersection of VA Beach Blvd and Military Highway.  HRJC is unique in my experience, in that they are organized under "Meetup" online gatherings and collect no dues. Only requirement for membership is owning a Jeep.

HRJC organizer Ron Flagg specifically asked me to speak about Shoe Creek and private/public property, as well as camping restrictions. They plan a Fall Wheeling Trip up there next week.

Please invite me to one of YOUR off-road club meetings!
I never fail to learn something worthwhile every time I visit a club.
Any questions you can post here, or email to:  landuse@va4wda.org

Thanks, HRJC!
-Phil

Here as promised are the electronic versions of the handouts I had with me:

MVUM of Shoe Creek. Note the "Louisiana-shaped" boot next to the Priest Wilderness Area.
Private lands are shaded grey and marked with "P"

Diagram of Shoe Creek

The Glenwood-Pedlar Ranger told me in no uncertain terms that the bottom entrance is a public right-of-way.
The troublesome part of Shoe Creek Trail is the half-mile in the center where it crosses public land. Also, trails leading off the main trail head into private property and are off-limits.  Please stick to the main trail and you should be fine.

Trip Reports / Second Mountain Trail cleanup
« Last post by pcwolf on September 27, 2013, 12:12:47 pm »
After the Virginia 4-Wheel Drive Assn. Annual Trailride myself and another retired member of Middle Penninsula Jeep Association, Inc. (MPJAI) continue for a few days from Oak Ridge since our rigs are already packed and we are up in the mountains.  This year, we took care of a little unfinished business from my Labor Day cleanup of Second Mountain.

MPJAI member doing what MPJAI members do:

Disgusting abuse of Public lands (before):

Some natural beauty restored to Public lands (after):

Thanks to MPJAI Immediate Past President Charles Sikes for offering the use of his trailer to haul dumped trash off the Second Mountain Trail!

I wanted to extend a HUGE "THANK YOU" to Bryan and all the OCC Gang!

I want to under-promise and over-deliver to the USFS to demonstrate we are committed to protecting our trails and keeping our access. This was a very productive afternoon and I am grateful that your members were willing to give up more trail riding in order to pick up other users careless trash.

Photos of this Labor Day cleanup are available on my Google album at the following link; https://plus.google.com/u/0/photos/103728412388815120284/albums/5915158930507772001

Thank you again, OCC!  You guys ROCK!
