Trip Reports / Second Mountain Trail cleanup
« Last post by pcwolf on September 27, 2013, 12:12:47 PM »
After the Virginia 4-Wheel Drive Assn. Annual Trailride myself and another retired member of Middle Penninsula Jeep Association, Inc. (MPJAI) continue for a few days from Oak Ridge since our rigs are already packed and we are up in the mountains.  This year, we took care of a little unfinished business from my Labor Day cleanup of Second Mountain.

MPJAI member doing what MPJAI members do:

Disgusting abuse of Public lands (before):

Some natural beauty restored to Public lands (after):

Thanks to MPJAI Immediate Past President Charles Sikes for offering the use of his trailer to haul dumped trash off the Second Mountain Trail!

PM sent.
I wanted to extend a HUGE "THANK YOU" to Bryan and all the OCC Gang!

I want to under-promise and over-deliver to the USFS to demonstrate we are committed to protecting our trails and keeping our access. This was a very productive afternoon and I am grateful that your members were willing to give up more trail riding in order to pick up other users careless trash.

Photos of this Labor Day cleanup are available on my Google album at the following link;

Thank you again, OCC!  You guys ROCK!

The Ranger had some ideas including educational patrols on the trails.  I am trying to get hold of Shenandoah 4-Wheelers because I live about 250 miles away in Tidewater. The Flagpole trail is actually closed because of this kind of activity. I thought about placing environmentally degradable signs but the Ranger said they all just get torn down anyway.

Agreed.  Just stay on the trail, don't blaze any new ones to get to what you think would be a cool obstacle.

Shoe Creek will be the next trail to be closed.  Perhaps VA4WDA can get a BFG trail grant to block off some of those illegal side trails?

You could always go wheeling in the George Washington National Forest near Harrisonburg.  There are some campgrounds throughout the forest and a lot of hotels in the city of Harrisonburg. The wheeling is tame, but you go to the GWNF for the scenery and camaraderie.

You dudes flat ROCK!!!

I first wheeled the Cove last year at your OCC Offroad 101/102

I met some damn fine wheelers in your Club, and I am honored to be in Virginia with all y'all.

We recently launched a huge initiative to mark the trails and create new, accurate maps of the Cove Campground in Gore, Virginia, the site of all Big Dogs Offroad Events.

Hopefully I can figure out how to attach some photos to this post ... we had one heck of a time doing this and there will be a long, long line of hardcore wheelers who will benefit from the heavy labors of my Club.

Yer Welcome  ;)
